Description
The Soviet 122mm A-19 was a formidable heavy gun, serving both as field artillery and an anti-tank weapon during the Second World War.
Developed in the late 1930s, the A-19 combined the barrel of the earlier M1931 gun with the carriage of the 152mm ML-20 howitzer, resulting in improved mobility and stability. Entering production in 1939, about 2,450 units were built before 1946. Operated by a nine-man crew, the gun weighed over 7 tonnes in action and fired 122mm shells at a muzzle velocity of around 806 m/s, with a maximum range exceeding 20 kilometres.
Initially deployed as corps-level artillery, the A-19 proved highly effective against German armour, capable of penetrating up to 125mm of armour at range. Its design was later adapted for vehicle-mounted versions, notably the IS-2 and IS-3 heavy tanks and the ISU-122 self-propelled gun, cementing its reputation as one of the Red Army’s most versatile and powerful weapons.
