Description
The 76mm regimental gun M1943 was a Soviet infantry support weapon introduced during the Second World War as an improvement over earlier 76mm regimental designs. Compact and relatively light for its calibre, it was intended to provide direct fire against enemy strongpoints, machine‑gun nests, and lightly armoured vehicles.
Its shorter barrel and reduced weight made it easier to manoeuvre with infantry units compared to heavier divisional artillery. Poland received the M1943 after the formation of the Polish People’s Army in the Soviet Union in 1943. It was issued to Polish regiments fighting alongside the Red Army on the Eastern Front, where it offered valuable close‑support firepower during offensives in Ukraine, Belarus, and later in Poland itself.
Although its anti‑tank capability was limited against late‑war German armour, the gun remained useful for suppressing infantry and fortifications.
