Description
The 7TP was a Polish light tank developed in the 1930s as an improved version of the British Vickers 6‑Ton design. Its name stood for siedmiotonowy polski (“seven‑tonne Polish”), though in practice it weighed closer to nine tonnes.
The 7TP was notable for being the first production tank fitted with a diesel engine, which gave it greater reliability and reduced fire risk compared to petrol‑powered contemporaries. Early models carried twin machine‑gun turrets, but the main production version mounted a 37mm Bofors anti‑tank gun in a single turret, making it one of the most effective light tanks of its era. At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939,
Poland fielded around 140 of these vehicles. They performed well against German Panzer I and II tanks, but their small numbers and lack of air support limited their impact. Many were destroyed in combat, while others were captured and reused by German forces.
