Description
The 82mm mortar was a Soviet infantry support weapon widely used during the Second World War, and it became a standard armament for Polish units formed under Soviet command. Introduced in the early 1930s and refined by 1941, the weapon was valued for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of production. It fired high‑explosive shells that were effective against entrenched infantry, machine‑gun positions, and light fortifications.
The Polish People’s Army, established in 1943, received large numbers of 82mm mortars as part of its Soviet‑supplied equipment. These mortars provided essential close fire support during operations in Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland, and later in the advance into Germany.
Their portability allowed them to be carried by small crews and deployed quickly in battle. Although limited in range compared to heavier artillery, the 82mm mortar was a versatile and dependable weapon that significantly enhanced Polish infantry firepower during the latter stages of the war.
