Description

The Autoblindo line of armoured cars (abbreviated to AB40, 41 and 43) were the principle armoured cars of the Italian army during World War II. The first variant, the AB40, was developed in 1940 and armed with twin turret mounted 8mm MGs. These were considered insufficient and the next variant, the AB41 was upgraded to a turret mounted 20mm autocannon. Most of the AB40s that had been produced were also retro-fitted with the new turret. While the AB41 was not perfect and had a range of issues, it was considered to be one of the best armoured cars of it’s time.

The AB40 saw little combat before being replaced, or upgraded to, the AB41. However AB41 saw action in North Africa, the Eastern Front, Yugoslavia, Italy and Hungary with various units included the Italian Africa Police and Bersaglieri as well as cavalry reconnaissance. Once the AB43 was produced, Italy was nearly out of the war and virtually all AB43 cars were used instead by the Wehrmacht.

The AB series was versatile, with a 4WD and 4 wheel steering setup as well as the ability to be altered for different terrain types – it could even run on rail tracks if necessary.
