Description
The PTRD‑41 was a Soviet single‑shot anti‑tank rifle introduced in 1941 to counter German armoured vehicles. Firing a powerful 14.5mm round, it could penetrate the armour of early and mid‑war tanks such as the Panzer III and IV, though it became less effective against heavier armour by 1943.
Polish forces aligned with the Soviet Union, particularly the Polish People’s Army formed in 1943, were equipped with PTRD rifles as part of their infantry anti‑tank defences. These weapons were issued to small teams who used them to target vulnerable areas of enemy tanks, such as tracks, vision slits, and side armour.
While heavy and cumbersome, the PTRD gave Polish infantry a means of resisting German armour during campaigns in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and Germany. Although eventually overshadowed by more powerful anti‑tank guns and shaped‑charge weapons, the PTRD remained a valuable tool in the Polish arsenal during the later stages of the war.
