Description
During World War II, the M3 37mm anti-tank gun was the first dedicated anti-tank weapon fielded by the U.S. Army. Introduced in 1940, it became the standard anti-tank gun for infantry units due to its lightweight design, which allowed it to be towed by jeeps and trucks.
Early in the war, the M3 was effective against lightly armoured vehicles, particularly in the Pacific theatre, where Japanese tanks were less heavily armoured. However, as German tanks became more advanced, the 37mm round struggled to penetrate their frontal armour, leading to its gradual replacement in Europe and the Mediterranean by the British-developed 57mm M1 gun.
Despite its declining effectiveness against tanks, the M3 remained in service throughout the war, often repurposed for infantry support and anti-personnel roles, firing high-explosive and canister rounds. It was also mounted on armoured vehicles, including the M3 Stuart light tank and M8 Greyhound armoured car.
The M3 saw action in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific, proving valuable in early engagements but ultimately becoming obsolete against heavily armoured enemy tanks. Its legacy influenced later anti-tank weapon development and tactics.
