Bedford MWD (British)

Description

The Bedford MWD was a 15-cwt (hundredweight) 4×2 general service truck used extensively by British forces during the Second World War. Introduced in 1939 and based on a modified commercial chassis, it featured a 3.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 72 bhp, offering dependable performance for light transport duties.

Its compact design, short wheelbase, and low centre of gravity made it agile and easy to manoeuvre, though its lack of four-wheel drive limited off-road capability. Early models had open cabs with canvas covers, while later versions included half-doors and folding windscreens for improved crew protection.

The MWD was used across all major theatres—from France and North Africa to Normandy and the Far East—carrying troops, equipment, and supplies. Over 66,000 units were produced, making it one of the most common British military vehicles of the war.
