Blacker Bombard (British)

Description

The Blacker Bombard was a makeshift anti-tank weapon designed to give the British Home Guard some form of anti-tank weaponry in case of invasion. It was a spigot mortar that fired a 19.5lb anti-tank round or a 14lb HE anti-personnel round. It was never tested in combat by the Home Guard and it’s effectiveness against a German invasion was never proven. However, it did see service later in the war with troops in North Africa.

In addition to the supplied cruciform mount, it could also be sited in a purpose built weapon pit to offer some protection to the crew at the expense of mobility.
