Description
The Soviet BS-3 100mm anti-tank gun, introduced in 1944, was one of the most powerful towed guns of the Second World War.
Developed from a naval weapon, the BS-3 (M1944) was designed to counter increasingly heavy German armour. Weighing 3,650 kg, the gun fired 100 × 695 mmR shells with a muzzle velocity of 900 m/s, giving it the ability to penetrate the frontal armour of German Tigers and Panthers. Its effective anti-tank range was around 1,000 metres, while its maximum firing range exceeded 20 kilometres, allowing it to serve as both an anti-tank and field gun.
Production ran from 1944 to 1951, with several hundred delivered before the war’s end. The BS-3 remained in service for decades, seeing combat in conflicts such as the Vietnam War and Yom Kippur War, and is still found in limited use today.
