Canadian Grizzly medium tank Mk. I (British)

Description

The Canadian Grizzly I was a modified version of the M4A1 Sherman tank, produced by Montreal Locomotive Works during World War II. Intended to equip Canadian armoured divisions, it featured minor modifications to suit Canadian military needs but was ultimately overshadowed by American Sherman production.

Manufactured between 1943 and 1944, only 188 units were built before production ceased. The Grizzly retained the cast hull of the M4A1 but incorporated Canadian Dry Pin (CDP) tracks, which eliminated the need for rubber components. It was powered by a Continental R-975 radial engine, producing 400 horsepower, and armed with a 75 mm M3 L/40 gun, supported by two .30-calibre Browning machine guns.

Although the Grizzly never saw combat, it was used for training and secondary roles. Some were later converted into armoured personnel carriers, while others were modified into self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, such as the Skink, which mounted quad 20 mm Polsten cannons.

After the war, 55 Grizzlies were sold to Portugal as part of a NATO military assistance program, remaining in service until the 1980s.
