Description

The French Char D1 tank was a light tank that was designed to support the infantry in the interwar period. It was based on the Renault NC1 prototype, which was modified to meet the requirements of the French plan of 1926. The D1 had a crew of three and was armed with a 47mm gun and a coaxial machine gun. It had a maximum speed of 17 km/h and a range of 120 km.

The D1 entered production in 1931 and 160 units were built until 1935. The first models had the Schneider ST-1 turret, but later ones had the improved ST-2 turret. Deployed with the 67th and 68th Bataillons de Chars de Combat (BCC), the D1 saw combat during the Battle of France in 1940, where it faced superior German tanks. Some D1s were captured by the Germans and used for training or security duties. A few D1s also fought with the Free French forces in Tunisia in 1942, where they participated in the Battle of Kasserine Pass.
