Description
The Type 4 Chi-So was a Japanese armoured carrier of World War II. It was based on the chassis of the Type 4 Chi-To medium tank, which was one of the most advanced Japanese tanks of the war. The Type 4 Chi-So had a crew of seven and could carry either troops or cargo. It also mounted a Type 97 heavy machine gun for self-defence.
Design of the Chi-So began in 1944 as a response to the increasing need for mobile infantry support. Able to transport troops and supplies across difficult terrain, it also could provide light fire support with its machine gun. However, only prototypes saw completion before the end of the war, and none entered combat action.
The Type 4 Chi-So had a similar design to the German Sd.Kfz. 251 widely used by the Wehrmacht. However, the Type 4 Chi-So had full tracks rather than half tracks with wheels, and had better cross-country performance. It also had thicker armor than the Sd.Kfz. 251, ranging from 12 to 25 mm. The Type 4 Chi-So had a top speed of 40 km/h and a range of 200 km.
One of the last armored vehicles developed by the Imperial Japanese Army, the Chi-So showed that Japan was capable of producing modern and effective armored carriers. However, it arrived too late to make a difference in the war. The Type 4 Chi-So remained an experimental vehicle that never fulfilled its potential.
