Description
The Citroën‑Kégresse P17 was a French half‑track artillery tractor developed in the late 1920s and produced between 1930 and 1933. Designed by engineer Adolphe Kégresse, it employed his innovative flexible track system, which replaced heavy metal links with rubberised belts to improve mobility on soft ground, mud, and snow.
Around 1,440 units were built, serving primarily with the French Army, but also with Polish and Belgian forces. The P17 was unarmoured and intended as a light tractor for towing artillery pieces, offering reliable off‑road performance at a time when mechanisation was transforming European armies.
Though technologically advanced for its era, by the outbreak of the Second World War it was largely obsolete, overshadowed by newer designs such as the Unic P107. Some P17s were captured and reused by the Wehrmacht after France’s defeat in 1940, marking the end of its limited but notable wartime service.
