Description
The Citroën-Kégresse P19 was a French half-track vehicle developed during the interwar period, combining a conventional front-wheel steering system with a rear track assembly for improved off-road mobility. Originally designed for reconnaissance and transport duties, the P19 was widely used by French colonial and metropolitan forces throughout the 1930s and into the early stages of the Second World War.
In response to growing concerns over aerial threats, several P19 chassis were adapted to serve as self-propelled anti-aircraft platforms. Around 1932, Hotchkiss mounted twin 13.2mm Mle 1930 heavy machine guns onto the P19, creating a mobile anti-aircraft unit. These guns, known for their high rate of fire and effective range, were installed on a fixed pedestal or tripod mount atop a reinforced platform. The configuration allowed for rapid deployment and flexible firing arcs, though the vehicle remained open-topped and lightly armoured.
While not mass-produced, this adaptation saw limited service with French forces and was also trialled for export, notably to Chile. The P19’s hybrid mobility and the potent 13.2mm Hotchkiss armament made it a versatile solution for low-level air defence, though it was ultimately overshadowed by more modern designs. Today, it remains a fascinating example of early mechanised anti-aircraft innovation.
