Description

The Comet was a late‑war British cruiser tank designed to provide a fast, well‑armed vehicle capable of matching German armour. Entering service in December 1944, it was developed from the Cromwell and fitted with the powerful 77 mm High Velocity gun, a weapon effective against Panther and even Tiger tanks at practical combat ranges.

Powered by the Rolls‑Royce Meteor engine, the Comet combined good mobility with improved armour protection, while retaining a relatively low profile. Its strengthened suspension and upgraded turret design made it a significant improvement over earlier British cruisers. A total of around 1,200 were built before the war’s end.

The Comet first saw action during the invasion of Germany in early 1945, serving with units such as the 11th Armoured Division. Crews valued its reliability, speed, and accurate gun, which allowed it to engage German armour effectively while supporting rapid advances. Although its combat career in the Second World War was brief, the Comet was widely regarded as one of Britain’s best wartime tanks and remained in service into the 1950s, influencing the design of the post‑war Centurion.
