Dodge Fargo 37mm (US)

Description

During World War II, the M6 Dodge Fargo 37mm Gun Motor Carriage was the first American tank destroyer, designed to provide mobile anti-tank support for infantry units. Based on the Dodge WC52 ¾-ton truck, it was modified to mount a rear-facing 37mm M3 anti-tank gun, earning the designation WC55.

Introduced in 1942, the M6 was deployed in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. It was used by tank destroyer battalions, including the 601st and 701st, during the Tunisia Campaign. However, its lack of armour and limited firepower made it ineffective against German tanks, leading to its gradual replacement. The gun fired M74 armour-piercing rounds, capable of penetrating 1.4 inches (3.6 cm) of armour at 500 yards, but struggled against heavily armoured vehicles.

Despite its shortcomings, the M6 remained in service until January 1945, often repurposed for infantry support and reconnaissance. Some units mounted .50 calibre machine guns to increase firepower. By the war’s end, many M6s were converted back into standard WC52 trucks.
