Engineer LMG squad (Soviet)

Description

The Soviet infantry engineer LMG rifle squad during the Second World War was typically composed of around 9 to 11 men, structured to provide both firepower and flexibility in assault and support roles. At its core was a Degtyaryov DP-27 light machine gun team, consisting of a gunner and assistant, supported by riflemen armed with Mosin-Nagant rifles.

The squad was led by a non-commissioned officer, often equipped with an SMG for close combat. Engineer squads were trained not only in infantry tactics but also in demolition, mine clearance, and fortification assault, making them vital in urban and fortified terrain. The DP-27’s 47-round pan magazine and moderate rate of fire offered sustained suppressive fire, though its weight and reload time were drawbacks.

These squads often operated in conjunction with flamethrower teams and sappers, forming the spearhead of assaults on bunkers, trenches, and urban strongpoints during late-war offensives.
