Description
The 120mm heavy mortar, known as the Granatwerfer 42 (GrW 42), was a significant artillery piece used by Nazi Germany during World War II. Designed in 1942, it was intended to provide German infantry with a powerful support weapon.
The GrW 42 was heavily influenced by the Soviet M1938 mortar and the French 120mm Brandt Mle 1935 mortar. Weighing 280 kg, it could fire a 15.6 kg bomb at a rate of 8-10 rounds per minute, with a maximum range of 6 km. Its elevation ranged from 45° to 85°, and it had a traverse of 8° to 17°.
The GrW 42’s design included a circular base plate, a tube, and a bi-pod, with a two-wheeled axle for towing. This mortar was a response to the need for heavier firepower and was used extensively on the Eastern Front.
Over 8,000 units were produced, and it remained in service throughout the war, demonstrating the importance of mortars in WWII combat.
