Fallschirmjager Raketenwerfer (German)

The Raketenwerfer, specifically the 8.8 cm Raketenwerfer 43, was an anti-tank rocket launcher developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. Known colloquially as “Püppchen,” meaning “little doll,” this weapon was designed to enhance the anti-tank capabilities of the infantry.

It was a reusable system that launched an 88 mm calibre rocket-propelled grenade with a shaped charge warhead from a small, two-wheeled carriage. The Raketenwerfer 43 was notable for its precision due to better sights and a carriage that allowed for a more stable firing platform, offering an effective range up to 500 meters for stationary targets and 230 meters for moving targets.

Despite these advantages, it was produced in much smaller numbers compared to the Panzerschreck and the Panzerfaust, mainly due to its complexity, cost, and longer production time. Approximately 3,000 units were manufactured between 1943 and 1945. The Raketenwerfer 43’s design was a significant departure from simpler launch mechanisms, as it utilized a miniature artillery piece complete with carriage and breech, rather than just a hollow tube with an ignition device. While it offered better accuracy and range, the trade-offs in terms of resource and time expenditure limited its widespread use during the conflict.
