Description

The Flakpanzer T-34(r) mit 2cm Flakvierling 38 was a German field conversion of a captured Soviet T-34 tank, repurposed as a self-propelled anti-aircraft platform. The “(r)” designation indicated its Russian origin. Following extensive combat on the Eastern Front, the Wehrmacht acquired numerous damaged or abandoned T-34s, many of which were adapted for secondary roles due to their robust chassis and reliable mobility.

In this variant, the original turret was removed and replaced with an open-topped superstructure housing the 2cm Flakvierling 38—a quadruple-barrelled anti-aircraft gun capable of delivering a high volume of fire against low-flying aircraft and lightly armoured ground targets. While the T-34’s armour and mobility remained advantageous, the open fighting compartment left the crew vulnerable to small arms and shrapnel.
