Forward Observer team (Polish)

Description

Forward observer officers played a crucial role in the Polish armed forces during the Second World War, particularly within artillery and mortar units. Their primary responsibility was to accompany infantry formations, identify enemy positions, and direct supporting fire with accuracy. Equipped with binoculars, maps, and radios or field telephones, they relayed coordinates back to artillery batteries, ensuring shells landed effectively on enemy strongpoints, armour, or troop concentrations.

In the Polish September Campaign of 1939, forward observers worked under difficult conditions, often exposed to enemy fire while maintaining visual contact with advancing units. Later, in the Polish People’s Army formed under Soviet command, forward observers continued this vital function, coordinating Soviet‑supplied artillery such as the 76.2mm ZiS‑3 and 120mm mortars.

Their skill in communication and battlefield awareness was essential to maximising firepower, reducing wasted ammunition, and supporting infantry assaults. Despite high risks, they were indispensable to Polish combat effectiveness.
