Freya Radar (German)

Description

The Freya radar was a German early warning system developed by GEMA and introduced just before World War II. Named after the Norse goddess Freyja, it operated at around 250 MHz with a range of up to 120 km, later extended to 160 km in advanced models. Unlike Britain’s Chain Home system, Freya used a shorter wavelength, allowing for a more compact and mobile antenna with higher resolution. However, its initial deployment was limited—only eight stations were operational at the outbreak of war.

Freya was integral to the Luftwaffe’s air defence strategy, particularly in the Kammhuber Line, a network of radar and night fighter zones. It detected incoming Allied aircraft and handed targets over to Würzburg radars for precise tracking and interception. Though early models couldn’t determine altitude, later versions improved angular resolution through phased antenna switching.

Freya also supported Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, querying aircraft equipped with FuG 25a transponders over 100 km. Naval variants like Seetakt were adapted for maritime use. Despite its technical sophistication, Freya’s complexity limited mass deployment compared to simpler Allied systems. Nonetheless, it played a crucial role in shaping radar warfare and air defence tactics throughout the conflict.
