Description
The Hetzer was a German tank destroyer based on the chassis of captured Panzer 38(t) tanks. It was designed in 1943 as a replacement for lighter tank destroyers and assault guns such as the StuG III and Marder series after Allied bombing affected German production. The Hetzer featured sloped armour and a low profile combined with the L/48 75mm gun. These features made it an effective ambush tank destroyer, though it was vulnerable when caught in the open. Nearly 3000 were produced and deployed between 1944-45.
