Description
The Hotchkiss H35, a French light tank, was developed in the 1930s to support infantry units. Approximately 400 units were produced, with a quarter designated for infantry and the remainder for cavalry. The H35 was known for its thick cast armour on both the turret and hull, providing a significant defensive edge. Despite this, its slow speed and relatively weak armament made it less effective against German forces during World War II.
The tank was part of a series of French armoured vehicles named after Adolphe Kégresse, a pioneer in track design. Modifications led to the H38 variant, and in total, around 1000 of the H35/H38/H39 series were produced. The H35’s design initially faced rejection by the French Infantry due to steering difficulties in cross-country conditions but was later adopted by the cavalry.
