Laffly S20 TL 6×6 Personnel Carrier (French)

Description

The Laffly S20 TL was a French 6×6 personnel carrier developed in 1935 to support the Dragons Portés—motorised infantry units of the Cavalry’s Light Mechanised Divisions (DLM). Designed by Laffly and powered by a 68 hp Hotchkiss petrol engine, it featured a distinctive configuration with auxiliary wheels at the front and beneath the cab to aid obstacle crossing. The vehicle could transport up to ten troops and their equipment, with 20 storage compartments integrated into the body.

Its versatility allowed it to carry various platoon types, including riflemen, machine gun crews, mortar teams, and anti-tank units. Some variants were fitted with mounts for FM 24/29 or Hotchkiss machine guns for anti-aircraft defence, though these were typically operated by the transported troops. A notable adaptation included 40 units with split windscreens to accommodate forward-facing 25mm anti-tank guns.

By May 1940, around 630 units had been produced, with deployment across multiple DLMs and reserve armoured divisions. The S20 TL’s robust cross-country performance and modular design made it a key component of French mechanised infantry tactics during the early stages of the Second World War. Though ultimately outclassed, it remains a symbol of interwar military innovation and adaptability.
