Description
The Latil TAR was a French heavy artillery tractor first introduced before the First World War, but it remained in service through the interwar years and into the Second World War. The wheeled 4×4 version, known for its high ground clearance and strong off‑road performance, was widely used to tow artillery and supply lorries across difficult terrain.
Its ability to negotiate rubble, shell craters, and trenches made it valuable during France’s rapid mechanisation. In addition to the wheeled type, Latil experimented with tracked and half‑tracked variants, adapting the TAR chassis to caterpillar systems for improved traction in mud and snow. By 1940, these vehicles were employed by the French Army to move heavy guns and equipment, though they were increasingly outdated compared to newer tractors.
After France’s defeat, many surviving Latil TARs were captured and pressed into service by the Wehrmacht, extending their operational life beyond French use
