Description
The Lorraine 37L, also known as the “Tracteur de Ravitaillement pour Chars 1937 L”, was a French light tracked armoured vehicle developed before World War II. It was initially designed to transport ammunition, fuel, and other supplies to tank units on the front lines. The Lorraine 37L was equipped with a Delahaye type 135 6-cylinder inline engine, providing a maximum speed of 35 km/h and an operational range of 137 km.
The standard Lorraine 37L had several variants, including the Lorraine 38L, which was an armoured personnel carrier version. The Lorraine 38L VBCP (Voiture Blindée de Chasseurs Portés) was used to transport infantry and saw action during the Battle of France. The Lorraine 37L chassis was also used as the basis for various German conversions after the fall of France.
A common variant were the various SPG “Schlepper” types. These mounted an assortment of artillery pieces to provide mobile howitzer support including the 15 cm sFH 13/1, 10.5 cm leFH 18/40 and even a 122mm M-30 Soviet howitzer.
The Wurfrahmen 40 was a rocket launcher variant mounted on various vehicles, including the Lorraine 37L. This variant was equipped with six 28 cm or 32 cm rockets and was used to provide heavy firepower against fortified positions. The Wurfrahmen 40 was also known as the “Stuka zu Fuß” (Stuka on Foot) due to its devastating firepower.
The Lorraine 37L chassis was also used for other specialized vehicles, such as the AK7 and various Schleppers. These vehicles were adapted for different roles, including ammunition carriers, command vehicles, and recovery vehicles. The versatility of the Lorraine 37L chassis made it a valuable asset for the German military during World War II.
The adaptability of the chassis allowed for a wide range of conversions, providing essential support to armoured and infantry units on the battlefield. Despite its vulnerabilities, the Lorraine 37L’s reliability and versatility made it a significant contributor to the war effort of both the French and German armies.
