Description
The M3 Lee, officially known as the Medium Tank, M3, was an American medium tank used during World War II. Developed in response to the urgent need for a tank with a 75 mm gun, the M3 Lee was designed quickly and entered production in late 1940. It was named “Lee” in U.S. service and “Grant” in British service, depending on the turret configuration.
The M3 Lee featured a unique design with a 75 mm gun mounted in a sponson on the right side of the hull and a 37 mm gun in a small turret on top. This configuration gave it a high silhouette, which was a significant drawback in combat. Despite this, the M3 Lee was appreciated for its reliability, firepower, and armour.
The tank saw extensive service in various theatres of World War II, including North Africa, where it played a crucial role in the early battles against German and Italian forces. However, its design limitations, such as the inability to take a hull-down position and its riveted construction, led to it being replaced by the more advanced M4 Sherman.
Overall, the M3 Lee was a stopgap measure that provided valuable service until more modern tanks could be produced
