Description
The M7 Priest, officially known as the 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7, was an American self-propelled artillery vehicle used during World War II. Developed to provide mobile artillery support for armoured operations, it was based on the chassis of the M3 Lee tank.
The M7 Priest was equipped with a 105 mm M2A1 howitzer, which offered significant firepower and a practical range of over 12,000 yards. Its design included an open-topped superstructure, which allowed for a wide field of fire but left the crew exposed to enemy fire from above12. The vehicle also featured a distinctive machine gun mount that resembled a pulpit, earning it the nickname “Priest” from British forces.
First seeing action with the British Eighth Army during the Second Battle of El Alamein, the M7 Priest proved to be a reliable and effective weapon. It was used extensively by Allied forces in various theatres, including North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific12. Over 4,000 units were produced, with several variants developed to improve performance and adapt to different combat needs.
The M7 Priest continued to serve in various armies well after World War II, demonstrating its enduring utility and effectiveness as a self-propelled artillery platform
