Description
The Marmon-Herrington CTLS-4TAY was a light tank developed in the United States during the late 1930s as part of a private venture aimed at the export market. It was a variant of the CTLS-4TA series, distinguished by its left-hand turret placement, with the driver seated on the right—opposite to the CTLS-4TAC. This asymmetrical layout limited turret traverse to approximately 270°, prompting tactical deployment in pairs to achieve full coverage.
Designed for colonial forces, particularly the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL), the CTLS-4TAY featured bolted armour up to 25 mm thick, a vertical volute spring suspension, and a compact two-man crew. Armament typically included two .30 calibre Browning machine guns—one in the turret and one in the hull. Dutch models omitted the roof-mounted gun found on other variants.
Powered by a 124 hp Hercules WXLC-3 engine, the tank reached speeds of up to 48 km/h and had a range of around 100 km. Though lacking a radio and advanced optics, it was valued for its simplicity and ease of maintenance. While many units were diverted to Australia and Suriname due to the Japanese invasion, others were used by the U.S. Army in Alaska. The CTLS-4TAY remained in limited service until the late 1940s.
