Description

The Maxim machine gun, originally designed in the late 19th century, remained in service during the Second World War and was widely used by Soviet forces and their allies. The Polish People’s Army, formed under Soviet command in 1943, received large numbers of the Soviet M1910 Maxim, mounted on wheeled Sokolov carriages.

This heavy water‑cooled weapon was valued for its reliability and sustained firepower, capable of delivering continuous bursts against enemy infantry and light vehicles. Polish units employed the Maxim to defend positions, support assaults, and provide suppressive fire during campaigns in Belarus, Poland, and Germany.

Although heavy and cumbersome compared to newer air‑cooled designs, its durability and effectiveness made it a trusted weapon in prolonged engagements. For the Polish People’s Army, the Maxim symbolised Soviet military support and offered a dependable means of strengthening infantry firepower during the later stages of the war.
