Description

The Soviet Union employed the Maxim M1910 heavy machine gun extensively during the Second World War, despite its origins in the early 20th century. Based on Hiram Maxim’s original design, the M1910 was water-cooled, belt-fed, and mounted on a wheeled Sokolov carriage with a gun shield.

It fired the standard 7.62×54mmR cartridge and was valued for its reliability and sustained fire capability, especially in defensive roles. Although the Soviets sought to replace it with more modern designs like the SG-43, the Maxim remained in widespread use due to production delays and the urgent demands of the Eastern Front. It was particularly effective in static positions, such as trenches and bunkers, where its weight and cooling system were less of a hindrance.

The gun’s ruggedness and ability to operate in harsh conditions made it a staple of Red Army firepower until its gradual phase-out began in 1943
