Description
Polish medics during the Second World War played a vital role in supporting soldiers on the battlefield and caring for the wounded under extremely difficult conditions. In the September Campaign of 1939, medical personnel worked tirelessly despite shortages of supplies, equipment, and transport.
They established field dressing stations close to the front lines, often under fire, and evacuated casualties using horse‑drawn wagons or improvised vehicles. After Poland’s defeat, medics continued their service in exile forces, such as the Polish Armed Forces in the West, and within the Polish People’s Army formed under Soviet command.
They provided first aid, organised surgical treatment, and coordinated the movement of wounded to hospitals. Many medics also risked their lives assisting civilians during bombings and reprisals. Despite limited resources, their dedication saved countless lives and demonstrated the resilience of Polish medical services throughout the war. Their contribution remains a significant part of Poland’s wartime history.
