Description

The Soviet MT-13, officially designated the 160mm mortar M1943, was the heaviest mortar fielded by the Red Army during the Second World War.

Developed in 1942 and adopted in 1943, the MT-13 fired massive 160mm shells weighing over 40 kilograms, making it a devastating weapon against fortifications and entrenched positions. Unlike lighter mortars, it was breech-loaded, which improved handling of its large ammunition. The weapon weighed around 1,170 kg. With a muzzle velocity of 245 m/s, it had an effective range of 5,150 metres, delivering powerful high-explosive fire at a rate of up to three rounds per minute.

Although cumbersome to move, the MT-13 proved invaluable in breaking German defensive lines during the Great Patriotic War. Around 535 units were produced, and the mortar continued to see service in later conflicts, including Korea and the Middle East, cementing its reputation as a formidable battlefield weapon.
