Description
Open gun pits constructed along the German Atlantik Wall were designed to accommodate captured French 155mm GPF (Grande Puissance Filloux) field guns, repurposed for coastal defence during the Second World War. These emplacements typically consisted of circular or semi-circular concrete platforms with low protective walls, allowing for a wide traverse and unobstructed fields of fire.
Unlike enclosed casemates, open pits offered quicker construction and flexibility in positioning, though at the cost of reduced crew protection. The 155mm GPF, a long-range artillery piece dating from the First World War, was valued for its reliability and range of up to 20 kilometres.
German engineers integrated these guns into defensive networks, often supported by nearby ammunition bunkers, fire control posts, and infantry positions. Despite their vulnerability to air attack and naval bombardment, open gun pits played a significant role in delaying Allied advances along the coast.
This model has a removable roof and/or floors for access.
Please note that these are designed to be built into terrain, gaming boards and so can be quite deep – please contact us if you require them to be lower to the tabletop and we will shorten them before printing to save material and cost for you.
