Description
The Panzer III Ausf. E Befehlswagen was a command tank variant of the Panzer III Ausf. E, introduced during the Second World War to provide enhanced communication and coordination capabilities for German armoured units. Based on the Ausf. E chassis, this specialised vehicle was equipped with additional radio equipment, including long-range transmitters and receivers, to facilitate effective communication between commanders and their units. The turret was modified to accommodate these systems, often replacing the main gun with a dummy weapon to make room for the radio equipment.
The Ausf. E Befehlswagen retained the torsion-bar suspension system and Maybach HL 120 TR engine, ensuring reliable mobility across varied terrains. Armour protection ranged from 30mm to 50mm, offering moderate defence against enemy fire. While it lacked the firepower of standard Panzer III variants, its role as a command vehicle was crucial for coordinating operations during the early stages of the war.
This variant saw service in multiple theatres, including the Eastern Front and North Africa, where its communication capabilities proved invaluable in executing complex manoeuvres. Despite its importance, the Befehlswagen was produced in limited numbers, reflecting its specialised role within the Wehrmacht’s armoured forces. It contributed significantly to the effectiveness of German armoured operations during the conflict.
