Description

The Panzer III Ausf. H, introduced in 1940, was an improved variant in the Panzer III series, designed to address the evolving demands of World War II. One of its key upgrades was thicker armour, ranging from 30mm to 50mm, which significantly improved its survivability against increasingly powerful anti-tank weapons. Many Ausf. H units were equipped with appliqué armour plates for additional protection.

The Ausf. H retained the effective 50mm KwK 38 L/42 gun as its primary weapon, along with two MG 34 machine guns for secondary armament. This firepower allowed it to engage enemy tanks and provide effective infantry support. Powered by the reliable Maybach HL 120 TRM engine and featuring torsion-bar suspension, the Ausf. H offered dependable mobility on rough terrain, maintaining the series’ reputation for adaptability.

Approximately 308 units of the Panzer III Ausf. H were produced, and they served in multiple theatres, including the Eastern Front and North Africa. The combination of enhanced armour, effective weaponry, and mobility made the Ausf. H a capable medium tank during the early phases of the war. However, as enemy tanks like the Soviet T-34 emerged, the Panzer III began to face limitations, leading to further upgrades in subsequent models.
