Panzer III Ausf M (German)

Description

The Panzer III Ausf. M, introduced in late 1942, was a refined version of Germany’s medium tank series during the Second World War. It featured significant improvements to its design and armour, including 50mm frontal armour supplemented with 20mm appliqué plates to enhance protection against anti-tank weapons. One of its defining features was the addition of Schürzen—thin armoured skirts fitted to the sides of the hull and turret. These skirts provided extra defence against shaped-charge weapons and light anti-tank projectiles, reflecting the growing threats on the battlefield.

The Ausf. M was equipped with the 50mm KwK 39 L/60 gun, capable of engaging heavily armoured enemy vehicles like the Soviet T-34. Secondary armament consisted of two MG 34 machine guns for anti-infantry and close-combat support. A modified exhaust system was introduced to reduce dust visibility, improving operational stealth in open environments.

Powered by the dependable Maybach HL 120 TRM engine and featuring a torsion-bar suspension system, the Ausf. M maintained excellent mobility across varied and challenging terrains. Approximately 250 units were produced and saw action on multiple fronts, including the Eastern Front. While effective in its role, the Panzer III Ausf. M, even with Schürzen, gradually became outclassed by more advanced Allied and Soviet tank designs as the war progressed.
