Description

During World War II, reindeer were the unsung heroes in the icy terrains of Northern Europe, especially in Finland and the Soviet Union. These hardy animals were perfect for the job, handling the extreme cold and rough landscapes where regular vehicles just couldn’t cut it. In Finland, reindeer were essential for moving supplies, equipment, and even injured soldiers through the snow. Their ability to navigate tough terrain made them invaluable for military operations.

The Soviet Union also got in on the action, creating special reindeer battalions. These units, made up of indigenous herders and their reindeer, were experts at surviving and operating in Arctic conditions. The reindeer were used to transport supplies, tow broken-down equipment, and even carry out secret missions behind enemy lines. They played a crucial role in keeping supply lines open and supporting Soviet troops in remote areas.

Using reindeer during the war showed how important it was to adapt to local conditions and use traditional knowledge. Despite the challenges, these animals and their handlers provided vital support to military operations, highlighting the unique and often overlooked contributions of reindeer in World War II.
