Description
The French SA-16 was an infantry support gun that first saw action in World War I. Designed by the Puteaux arsenal, it had a fast-firing mechanism that could destroy machine gun nests. The gun had a caliber of 37mm and a barrel length of 790mm. It fired high-explosive or armor-piercing shells with a muzzle velocity of about 370 m/s. The gun had a practical range of 400m against tanks and 1500m against soft targets. It could fire 15 to 30 rounds per minute and had an elevation range of -8° to +17°.
The SA-16 saw action in various theaters of World War II, including the Battle of France, the Dunkirk evacuation, and the North African campaign. Various naval vessels also used it as an anti-aircraft gun. The gun was effective against light armored vehicles, but struggled against heavier tanks. Eventually more powerful anti-tank guns, such as the 47mm SA-37 and the 75mm Mle 1897 replaced it in all roles.
