Description

The Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.D mit Zwilling 12cm Granatwerfer 42 was a German field conversion that transformed the versatile half-track into a mobile heavy mortar carrier. The Ausf.D variant of the Sd.Kfz.251 featured simplified construction for mass production, making it an ideal platform for battlefield adaptations. In this case, it was fitted with a twin mount (Zwilling) of the 12cm Granatwerfer 42, a powerful infantry mortar with excellent range and explosive effect.

Mounted in the rear compartment, the twin mortars provided rapid indirect fire support, particularly effective in suppressing enemy positions and fortifications. The open-topped design allowed for quick deployment and reloading, though it left the crew exposed to small arms and shrapnel. Ammunition stowage was limited, but the vehicle’s mobility enabled it to operate close to the front lines and withdraw swiftly after firing.
