Description
Soviet flag-bearing soldiers held symbolic and ceremonial roles during the Second World War, particularly in major offensives and propaganda efforts. While not typically part of frontline combat units, these soldiers were often selected from elite or politically reliable formations to carry the Red Banner—a powerful emblem of Soviet ideology and unity.
Their presence was especially prominent during victory parades, morale-boosting events, and staged moments such as the iconic raising of the Soviet flag over the Reichstag on 2 May 1945. This event, immortalised in a photograph by Yevgeny Khaldei, became a defining image of Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany. The act of raising the flag was both a literal and symbolic conquest, often involving staged or reenacted scenes for propaganda purposes.
Flag bearers were sometimes accompanied by guards or fellow soldiers and were expected to uphold the honour of the Soviet state, even under fire. Their role blended patriotism, theatre, and political messaging.
