Description

The Sturm-Infanteriegeschütz 33B, or “StuG 33b” was a formidable World War II German self-propelled heavy assault gun. It was a product of necessity and innovation in the face of adversity. Designed in the early 1940s, it was built on the reliable chassis of the Sturmgeschütz III and equipped with a potent 15 cm sIG 33/1 infantry gun. This howitzer was capable of delivering devastating firepower against enemy fortifications and defences. Its creation was spurred by the dire circumstances of the Battle of Stalingrad, where German forces required heavy artillery that could navigate the rubble and provide close support to infantry units.
The first batch of these assault guns rolled out by the end of October 1942, assigned to Assault Gun Battalions 177 and 244, which were engaged in the intense urban warfare of Stalingrad. However, the second batch destined for Battalions 243 and 245 never reached its intended recipients due to the encirclement of the German 6th Army. Instead, these StuG 33Bs were incorporated into the Assault Infantry Gun Batterie/Demonstration Battalion XVII, supporting the 22nd Panzer Division in the ill-fated relief attempt of the trapped forces.
Despite their limited numbers — only 24 were produced — the StuG 33Bs left a mark on the battlefield. Their deployment, although brief, showcased the adaptability and desperation of German engineering and tactics during the latter stages of the war. The last recorded mention of these assault guns was in September 1944, with a mere five remaining in service. Today, a single StuG 33B stands as a testament to this history at the Kubinka Tank Museum near Moscow.
The StuG 33B’s journey from the drawing boards to the battlefields of Stalingrad is a poignant chapter in the annals of military history, reflecting the relentless innovation and the brutal reality of warfare.
