Description
The SU‑76 was a Soviet light self‑propelled gun introduced in 1942 and widely used during the Second World War. Built on a modified T‑70 light tank chassis, it mounted the 76.2mm ZiS‑3 field gun, giving infantry mobile artillery support and limited anti‑tank capability. Its open‑topped design made it vulnerable to small‑arms fire and shrapnel, but it was simple, reliable, and easy to produce, with over 14,000 manufactured.
Polish forces aligned with the Soviet Union, particularly the Polish People’s Army formed in 1943, received the SU‑76 as part of their armoured units. It was employed in battles across Belarus, Poland, and Germany, providing direct fire against fortifications and supporting infantry assaults. Though less effective against heavy German armour, it was valued for mobility and versatility.
