Description
The SU-76i (“i” meaning “nostrannaya” – foreign)was an interim fix to the problem of limited mobile AT guns faced by the Soviets in 1943. The open topped SU-76 was not popular due to unreliability and difficulty in driving. This led to its nickname of “Suchka” – Little Bitch. In an attempt to increase the number of AT vehicles and counter the terrible SU-76, captured StuG and PzIII tank chassis were refitted with an armoured superstructure and the S-1 76.2mm AT gun.
Unlike the SU-76, the SU-76i proved popular with crews as the enclosed space was much warmer than the open topped SU-76 (an important consideration during a Russian winter!), it was better armoured and more reliable as well.
Nearly 200 were produced and used during 1943-1944.
