Description

The Japanese Type 38 75mm howitzer, also known as the Type 38 75mm field gun, was a versatile artillery piece adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1905. Originally designed by the German company Krupp, it was introduced to Japan following the Russo-Japanese War and designated as the Type 38, marking the 38th year of Emperor Meiji’s reign. Early models were imported, but the majority were produced under licence by Osaka Arsenal.

The Type 38 featured a hydro-spring recoil system and an interrupted screw breechblock. It was mounted on a box trail carriage, which limited its elevation and traverse. The weapon fired fixed ammunition, including high-explosive and shrapnel shells, with a maximum range of approximately 8,350 metres. An improved version, introduced after World War I, increased the elevation and range to 11,600 metres, enhancing its effectiveness.

Despite being considered obsolete by the 1930s, the Type 38 remained in service during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, often used in secondary roles or by reserve units. Its reliability and ease of use ensured its continued deployment, even as more modern artillery pieces became available. The Type 38 exemplifies the transition from early 20th-century to modern field artillery design.
