Description
The Japanese Type 92 70mm howitzer, officially designated as the Type 92 battalion gun, was a light and versatile artillery piece developed by the Imperial Japanese Army. Adopted in 1932, corresponding to the 2592nd year of the Japanese imperial calendar, it was designed to address the limitations of earlier infantry support weapons, such as the Type 11 37mm infantry gun and Type 11 70mm mortar.
The Type 92 featured a short barrel mounted on a split-trail carriage, allowing for both direct and indirect fire. It utilised a hydro-spring recoil system and an interrupted thread breechblock mechanism. Lightweight and manoeuvrable, the gun could be towed by a single horse or repositioned manually by its crew. It fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive, smoke, and hollow-charge anti-tank rounds, with a maximum range of approximately 2,785 metres. Its rate of fire was up to 10 rounds per minute.
The Type 92 saw extensive use during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, proving effective against fortified positions and light armour. Despite its unconventional appearance, it was well-regarded for its reliability and adaptability. The Type 92 remained a key component of Japanese infantry units throughout the conflict, exemplifying practical and innovative artillery design.
