Description
The Japanese Type 96 150mm howitzer was a modern and effective artillery piece developed by the Imperial Japanese Army in the 1930s. Officially adopted in 1936, corresponding to the 2596th year of the Japanese imperial calendar, it was designed to replace the ageing Type 4 150mm howitzer in frontline combat units.
The Type 96 featured a hydro-pneumatic recoil system and an interrupted screw breechblock mechanism. It was mounted on a split-trail carriage with detachable spades for stability during firing. The weapon fired a variety of shells, including high-explosive, armour-piercing, shrapnel, smoke, and incendiary tracer rounds. With a maximum range of approximately 11,900 metres, it was capable of delivering effective fire support over long distances. Its rate of fire ranged from 3 to 4 rounds per minute, and it had a muzzle velocity of 540 metres per second.
The Type 96 was widely used during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars, and World War II. It earned high praise for its reliability and adaptability, being regarded as one of the most well-designed weapons in the Japanese arsenal. Despite its weight and transport challenges, the Type 96 remained a key component of Japanese heavy artillery units until the end of the Pacific War.
