Description
During World War II, the Willys MB Jeep was adapted for CASEVAC (Casualty Evacuation) missions, providing a lightweight and mobile solution for transporting wounded soldiers from the battlefield. The Jeep’s rugged design, four-wheel-drive capability, and compact size made it ideal for navigating rough terrain, ensuring rapid evacuation under combat conditions.
Modified CASEVAC Jeeps were equipped with stretcher racks, allowing medics to transport injured personnel efficiently. Some versions replaced the rear seats with brackets to secure two stretchers, while others had canvas covers for protection. These Jeeps were used extensively in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific, where traditional ambulances struggled with muddy roads, dense forests, and mountainous terrain.
The U.S. Army Medical Corps relied on these vehicles to move casualties from front-line aid stations to field hospitals, significantly improving survival rates. Their speed and manoeuvrability allowed medics to reach wounded soldiers quickly, reducing the time between injury and treatment.
